5 Ways to Overcome Fear

What stops us from getting what we want in life? Friends? Family? Sometimes it could be because we’re afraid someone will laugh at you. Coming from someone who was teased all the time in school, this fear can be paralyzing. It is definitely an uncomfortable feeling. When I started in Network Marketing, I was told if you feel uncomfortable that it is good and is a sign that you are growing. Is this really the case because it didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I thought about it a little more…when you are afraid and take action to overcome that fear then one has shown growth.

We can let fear control our lives. We can stay in our comfort zone where we are safe and secure but then what kind of life would that be? Would that be living our lives to our fullest potential? If we don’t venture out of our comfort zone how can we use all that God has given us? I believe it disappoints God when we do not live life to the fullest. Just as a parent wants to see their children happy, God wants to see us happy and enjoying life not “playing it safe” and quietly getting through life with heartache and struggles. Don’t get me wrong we all have struggles but when we overcome them there is success on the other side just waiting for us to enjoy.

So how do we overcome those fears? I found an article from Henrik Edberg that I thought gave some good ideas on ways we can overcome fear.

  1. Take small steps. Identify your fear and make a plan with smaller steps you can take to gradually lessen your discomfort.
  2. Getting some concrete, positive motivation. Write down all the wonderful things you will gain in your life by overcoming this fear.
  3. Seeing failure and rejection in a new light. Don’t look at failure as a negative but see failure simply as feedback on what you need to improve on. Listen to the advice the failure gives you and you will improve. And success will come.
  4. Being in the now. Don’t dwell on what has gone wrong in the past or what could go wrong in the future but focus on what needs to be done now.
  5. Redefine you, me and reality. A negative view of the world can create fear and hold you back. Have a positive outlook try to dwell on the positive instead of thinking about the negative.

Remind yourself of your dreams. Picture what you want in your mind it’s even a good idea to make a collage of what you want to be a constant reminder. When we let our dreams fade we are like a bird with a broken wing, we can get around but we cannot be all that God intended for us to be. One of my favorite quotes is from lyrics from a song the Eagles recorded in 1974, “So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key.” Behind every obstacle is success waiting for us to enjoy, it would be a shame going through life without ever enjoying that success that awaits because we were to afraid.
