Do you have specialized knowledge?

  • Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Chapter 5 – The Fourth Step towards riches
Specialized Knowledge, Personal Experiences, or Observations

In this chapter, Mr. Hill talks about how each of us have different experiences, different observations therefore different knowledge than others. We all have specialized knowledge that nobody else has because there is nobody else on this earth that has experienced exactly the same thing in the exact same way as someone else. We all have different feelings about different experiences. I may be reading “Think and Grow Rich” with others in my mastermind group but the knowledge that I am gaining from reading the book isn’t the same as the knowledge someone else may be getting. What I’m experiencing at this point in my life is giving me a different interpretation than someone else.

My sister and I both grew up in the same house and even though we both shared experiences we both came away from them having a different understanding from them. Our parents were divorced and we lived with our mother. Unfortunately, neither our father nor our mother took their responsibility of parenting very seriously, and my sister and I were left to raise ourselves. We both experienced being left home alone to take care of each other. While I tried to make up for the fact that my sister wasn’t able to know the experience of having a mother’s love, she did understand the power of a sister’s love. She grew up resenting my mother and I grew up making excuses for her. But even though we experienced the “same” events we both came away from them with a different understanding. Each of us has a unique perspective that adds to the individuals that we are and future events will shape the person we become in the future.

With those unique specialized qualities we each have it is just a piece of a much larger picture. We all have something special to contribute somewhere. Like a mosaic, each small piece we contribute makes up a part of the masterpiece. I cannot build a successful business all by myself but I can surround myself with others that specialize in areas I am not as knowledgeable, just as I can share my specialized knowledge to help others. “The way to success is the way of continuous pursuit of knowledge.” When we stop learning we stop living.

Are the Elephants in your Mind Stomping out your Dreams?

  • Posted on January 21, 2011 at 1:59 pm

This is a great article that my good friend Bruce Liebing posted on his blog along with other great posts about mindset and success. Check is out http://tinyurl.com/4zxwa88.
What do You mean I have an elephant in my mind!!! Yes, and for most of us we don’t even know its there! We call it many other things, like “I can’t because….”, “thats IMPOSSIBLE!”, “It’s just a dream, but…), “I’m not that lucky!” or any other excuse or doubt…. These are “elephants” taking up space, and stomping out Your dreams! (in Your garden of Hope) Is there a way of getting rid of the huge pests? Yes! A “Mental” cleanse!

Remember the saying that “elephants never forget”? Well, Your mind is like that elephant that was trained to not pull on its’ chains (boundaries) or challenge its’ masters… They (authority figures) started out when You were very young, telling you, “You can’t do that!”, “YOU can’t do this!”, “You aren’t that smart!”, “You were born….!”(insinuating a handicap of sorts) … and a million other things to say that YOU are some how not able to achieve ….???(Your hopes and dreams)…! Are those limitations anything other than an elephant, crushing your flowers of hope?

Let’s think about it… Are those Elephants real? Are You really handicapped? (physically or mentally) Or, are You just taking someone’s word for it? Most of us, most of the time are just taking other people’s word for it, without even questioning it! STOP IT! Just STOP IT! DO NOT rent space to others in Your mind! They will just fill that space with their leftover garbage!

So how do I get this Elephant out of my mind? Simple!… Now, I did NOT say it is easy… it takes work!

First thing You have to do is to figure out what YOU want in life… What are YOUR dreams??? What do YOU like??? And things like… what You would do if “money” was not an issue???? All these things gives You a clue to who YOU really are!

Next is to kick out the renters and elephants, by taking back control of Your mind! The simplest way is to crowd them out with a positive mindset… Telling yourself: “YES I CAN…!!!”, ” IT (???) WILL HAPPEN!”, “IMPOSSIBLE IS NOT A WORD!” (Just hasn’t been done yet!)… Then repeating this hundreds of times a day! (no to worry, it doesn’t take up that much time) Flooding Your mind with the positive emotions, will crowd out those negative thoughts (elephants) breaking those chains of “other people’s limitations” from Your mind. Thus, leaving Your hopes and dreams to have the room (whole house or “Mind”) to grow and mature.

Throughout the “mental cleanse” process, it is best to distance yourself from any negative sources and to surround Yourself with as many positive influences as YOU can! (stopping the in-flow of the negative mind renter’s garbage) By doing this, You speed up the change and increase YOUR ability to stick with those good changes.

So become that “elephant exterminator”, and get rid of the elephant that is stomping out the “roses” in Your dreams…. OR, finish moving into Your “house” (mind) by Kicking out the renters (and their garbage), so that YOU can fully unpack Your own hopes and dreams, filling YOUR house (mind) with Love, Hope and Prosperity!

One great place to get rid of the unwanted garbage that fills your mind and surround yourself with positive, uplifting people is to be a part of the 30 Day Mental Cleanse at http://30daymentalcleanse.info

We Grow When We Serve

  • Posted on January 19, 2011 at 1:09 pm

The concept that leadership is service to others has gotten much coverage in leadership literature lately, but it is still a concept that seems foreign to many people.  When I get into discussions about leadership with people, they automatically think of the perks of leadership, power, prestige, and status.  But these things are not the true features of leadership.  Real leadership involves service, sacrifice, dying to self, responsibility, calculated risk taking, empowering of others, and struggle.

The decision to lead is a decision to take responsibility.  Automatically, the leader is asked to take responsibility beyond what others are assuming.  That is why I say that often times a leader is asked to carry an “unfair” load.  He or she is the one out front hitting the resistance first, clearing the path for the followers to come.

Jesus was, of course, the perfect example of leadership.  He came to serve, to show true humility, and to sacrifice for his beloved people.  His example towers above the pretenders who try to teach that leadership is stepping on others to get ahead, or power or position.  Jesus demonstrated just the opposite.  As leaders, we must be willing to serve others before self.  This is easier said than done, certainly, but is a source of great joy.  In fact, leaders are the happiest when they are serving others.  And I believe this grows with the leader.

What do I mean?  At first, a new leader might find it difficult to sacrifice their own self interest in the moment for the service of another person.  But then they make the sacrifice of time or resources on behalf of another and discover that it brings them happiness.  This makes it a little easier the next time.  Then, as the leader meets challenges, overcomes their own selfishness and learns to serve others more and more, the opportunities for service grow bigger.  And the leader grows bigger at the same time.  Eventually, what would have seemed impossibly difficult or imposing is handled by the leader without a pause.  The leader’s contribution and impact grow larger and more significant.  As this process continues, usually the leader’s impact and following expands beyond what he or she ever could have imagined at the beginning.  For this reason, the best way to begin growing as a leader is simply to begin serving.  Don’t worry about how far the journey will take you or what will be coming against you down the road.  Serve right where you are, giving of yourself to the people God brings into your life.  Make time for them.  Find out what they need.  Determine how you can help.  Care.  Share.  Give.  Grow.  And I think you’ll discover along the way, that the more you serve others, the more you receive in return.  It’s one of life’s most beautiful paradoxes, and I hope you enjoy it to its limits (if there are any)!

Faith – Visualization of and Attainment of Desire

  • Posted on January 4, 2011 at 11:29 am

One of my resolutions for the New Year was to write a summary of what I learned in reading each chapter of “Think and Grow Rich” by Napolean Hill. This book has changed my life like no other book I’ve read. It has excellent information on how to build a business but more than that is how one can improve how they live and think. Chapter 1 discusses how our thoughts are what become things in our lives. Chapter 2 is about how we have to have a desire to begin the process of attaining wealth and riches. By desire, I do not mean wishes but having a desire (a want) and putting action behind it. Chapter 3 is about faith and having faith that your desire will manifest itself.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” I got to thinking, what does that really mean? And here’s what I came up with, ‘Faith is something one desires and affirmation of things not seen.’ How can one affirm something they can’t see? That is faith! These are not things that are imagined but things that happen that cannot be fully explained.

One example that comes to my mind of this would be to try and explain how a pilot could possibly land an airplane in the Hudson River and not one passenger is injured. It defies all logic and yet it happened. I believe it was the faith of that pilot that brought down that aircraft safely. He believed it could be done and did it. Other pilots in the same situation that did not believe would not have had such an outcome.

According to Napolean Hill, “The subconscious mind works with the material WE feed it, through our thought impulses.” What are you feeding your mind? Is it positive healthy food or negative junk food? If we are feeding it positive healthy food we are going to get positive healthy results but if we feed our mind with negative junk food then we are going to produce negative results. I can think my way to poverty (been there; done that!) or I can think my way to success and believe that it’s going to happen. I’m going to opt for the second choice and keep on believing until I see it become a reality in my life.
