How effective is your elevator pitch?

  • Posted on October 27, 2010 at 2:07 pm

How effective is your elevator pitch? You know, that “thing” you say whenever you are asked, “So, what do you do?”

How you answer that question IS your “elevator pitch,” and it is an woefully underused opportunity for many business owners.

With a bit of thinking and practice, you can handle that common question with a reply that positions you and your business in their mind.

There are countless websites, ideas and articles about creating your pitch. Great! But when do you have time to read any of them, much less develop your pitch?

Here is a link to a snazzy tool from Harvard Business School which helps you craft your pitch – right now — in just a few minutes. The tool then evaluates your pitch, giving you suggestions on ways to improve its effectiveness.

What I like about the tool is that it breaks down the elevator pitch into several parts — who you are, what you do, why you are unique, and what your goal is. By doing this, it forces you to focus on one piece at a time, making creating your pitch less intimidating.

What are you watering your dreams with?

Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dreams. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. ~Lao Tzu

Carefully Select the People who Influence your Life

When I was a kid growing up my mom gave me all sorts of advice. Today I can still hear her saying, “Trish choose your friends carefully. Don’t get mixed up with the wrong group.” Mom knew that children are easily influenced by their peers and that if I ran with the wrong crowd they’d have a negative influence on my life.

Mom’s lesson holds true for children, teens, college students and adults. It is well documented that our fundamental beliefs and attitudes are greatly influenced by the people we allow into our lives. If we associate with people who gossip, we are likely to gossip. If we are around people who swear and use inappropriate language, we’re likely to exhibit the same behavior.

Dr. David McClelland of Harvard University concluded after 25 years of research that the choice of a negative “reference group” was in itself enough to condemn a person to failure and underachievement in life.

Your associations are some of the most powerful factors in determining who you become and what you accomplish in your life. As an example, if we hang out with pessimistic people who are critical of us, their negative comments will likely impact how we view our abilities and our self-image.

Recognizing this truth, how do we use it to our advantage? It’s simple. If we want to advance our lives personally and professionally, we must associate ourselves with people who will be a positive influence on our lives.

Do you play sports? If so, do you notice how you play better when you play with better players?

Do you play board or card games? Again, do you notice how you step up your game when you play with better competitors?

When we associate with others who have a greater skill set or have achieved more, we are challenged. It brings out the best in us and inspires us to do better. Observing and modeling someone’s positive example will help us reach new heights. We’re not just talking sports and games here. This applies to everything we do.

Surrounding ourselves with optimistic and uplifting people has a direct cause and effect on our demeanor, confidence level and performance. It’s all positive!

The legendary Zig Ziglar said it best, “If you want to fly with the eagles you can’t continue to scratch with the turkeys.”

I encourage you to take ten minutes right now and think about the people who you spend a lot of time- at home, in the work place and socially. Who are they? Who are the positive influences? Who are negative one’s?

Oh, and don’t think you can prevent the negative ones from influencing you. They influence you whether you are consciously aware of it or not. EVERYONE in your life influences you in some capacity.

If you’ve characterized some of your friends as a negative influence, let me encourage you to begin to slowly reduce the amount of time you spend in those relationships.

If your family members say negative and discouraging things to you, have a conversation with them. Help them understand how their statements are damaging and ask them to focus on encouraging you rather than tearing you down.

If you work in an environment that is not healthy, read my post How to Get Any Job You Want and find a new place to work. Life is too short to work in a negative environment.

I realize these suggestions may represent radical changes in your life. They may not be easy to accomplish all at once, but if enjoying your life and achieving your personal best is a priority, surrounding yourself with people who can help you reach your full potential is a necessity.

What you think is what you get…

Did you know that your thoughts control your results? What kind of results are your thoughts bringing you? Napolean Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” talks about using your thoughts to “self hypnotize” your subconscious. If you are feeding your mind with negative thoughts then your results are going to be negative but if you program your mind with positive thoughts and ideas and visualize what you want then that is what will come to you. You have to have faith and truly believe what you want will be or else you’re just sabotaging yourself. Many people have been programmed to think the worst of themselves (myself included) but instead turn it around and dwell on all the good and positive that you have to contribute and your subconscious will feed on that and your results will be much better.

Impress Prospects with Confidence

A lot of what determines success or failure is NOT the obvious stuff that you see and are concerned with.

Studies have shown that whether you’re talking to someone on the phone, or in person, their impression of you & what you say is based ONLY ABOUT 8% on the words you use!!

The other 92% is your body language and the sound & qualities of your voice. I’m sure it’s easy for you to understand that if you sound uncertain, no one is going to follow you.

To be successful, you must sound and look like you know exactly what you are doing.

That is one of the reasons that this blog is so useful to you. The more time you spend learning about the intricacies, the more certainty you will have when you talk to a prospects. And as you study & gain the ability to direct them to a specific page that answers their question, you look to them like someone who really knows what they are doing.

And when they see you that way, it’s a big key to their desire to work with you.

The better you get at this, the more confident you will sound when you speak with a prospect. When they can hear in your voice that you are certain you know what you’re talking about, you are in good shape.

To Your Success!
