5 Ways to Overcome Fear

What stops us from getting what we want in life? Friends? Family? Sometimes it could be because we’re afraid someone will laugh at you. Coming from someone who was teased all the time in school, this fear can be paralyzing. It is definitely an uncomfortable feeling. When I started in Network Marketing, I was told if you feel uncomfortable that it is good and is a sign that you are growing. Is this really the case because it didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but I thought about it a little more…when you are afraid and take action to overcome that fear then one has shown growth.

We can let fear control our lives. We can stay in our comfort zone where we are safe and secure but then what kind of life would that be? Would that be living our lives to our fullest potential? If we don’t venture out of our comfort zone how can we use all that God has given us? I believe it disappoints God when we do not live life to the fullest. Just as a parent wants to see their children happy, God wants to see us happy and enjoying life not “playing it safe” and quietly getting through life with heartache and struggles. Don’t get me wrong we all have struggles but when we overcome them there is success on the other side just waiting for us to enjoy.

So how do we overcome those fears? I found an article from Henrik Edberg that I thought gave some good ideas on ways we can overcome fear.

  1. Take small steps. Identify your fear and make a plan with smaller steps you can take to gradually lessen your discomfort.
  2. Getting some concrete, positive motivation. Write down all the wonderful things you will gain in your life by overcoming this fear.
  3. Seeing failure and rejection in a new light. Don’t look at failure as a negative but see failure simply as feedback on what you need to improve on. Listen to the advice the failure gives you and you will improve. And success will come.
  4. Being in the now. Don’t dwell on what has gone wrong in the past or what could go wrong in the future but focus on what needs to be done now.
  5. Redefine you, me and reality. A negative view of the world can create fear and hold you back. Have a positive outlook try to dwell on the positive instead of thinking about the negative.

Remind yourself of your dreams. Picture what you want in your mind it’s even a good idea to make a collage of what you want to be a constant reminder. When we let our dreams fade we are like a bird with a broken wing, we can get around but we cannot be all that God intended for us to be. One of my favorite quotes is from lyrics from a song the Eagles recorded in 1974, “So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key.” Behind every obstacle is success waiting for us to enjoy, it would be a shame going through life without ever enjoying that success that awaits because we were to afraid.

You Can’t Improve What You Don’t Measure

  • Posted on August 24, 2010 at 11:39 pm

This article was written by Todd Smith and posted on his blog “Little Things Matter.” I thought it was worth posting.  The article talks about if we don’t set goals, we cannot measure them and if we cannot measure them, we have no way of knowing if we have made progress or not.

Why Measure?

Quite simply, what gets measured gets done. Think about it. The very nature of knowing that something is being monitored causes us to work harder and perform better. There’s actually proof of this—it’s called the Hawthorne Effect.

Coined in 1955 by Henry Landsberger, the Hawthorne Effect describes a form of reactivity on the part of people whereby they improve an aspect of behavior being measured simply in response to the fact that the measurement is taking place! Amazing, isn’t it!

When you measure your own performance, positive things happen:

  • You are able to set goals and evaluate your progress.
  • You always know exactly where you stand.
  • You can identify key aspects you want to refine.
  • You are able to see the results of your refinements.
  • You can quickly and accurately trouble shoot your problems

Measuring performance showed us how we are doing, it brings attention to the key elements of our performance and motivates us to strive harder to improve in each area.

Measuring and Improving

In order to develop or improve any area of your life, you need to do three things:

  1. You need to know your starting point.
  2. You need a goal.
  3. You need to determine how you are going to measure your progress.

Develop an Action Plan

Whether in business, sports, school, or any area of life, you can’t improve what you don’t measure. When you track and measure your results each month, you will have new benchmarks that you can strive to improve upon the next month. If you focus on improving your results month after month, you will begin to see amazing changes take place in your performance and results.

Remember: You can’t improve what you don’t measure.

When you begin to measure what you do and how well you do it, you will begin to see the refinements you can make.  As you strive to make small improvements day after day and week after week, nothing can stop you from achieving your goals.

Welcome to my blog

  • Posted on August 21, 2010 at 9:35 am

Thank you for visiting my blog. I hope you find useful information and tips to grow as a person and to build your business. I have always been a person that has done what everyone else has told me to do so for me to venture in starting my own business was a shock to a lot of people but I knew I could do it. One of my favorite movies is “The Pursuit of Happiness” with Will Smith. This is an inspirational story of a man who, through a series of events, loses his wife, his house and yet he’s committed to his son and refuses to give up. He has one shot for a position in a stockbroker internship program. Against all odds, he never loses focus of his goal and in the end he overcomes all obstacles and “his ship comes in.”

This movie showed me that we are in control of our destiny. If I’m not happy with my life then it is up to me to change it. The road to happiness can sometimes feel like an experience of trial and error but it is worth the sacrifice in order to find the inner peace of true happiness. I believe we all have a purpose while on this earth and it’s up to us to find what that purpose is.

When you don’t choose your own purpose, a purpose will be given to you by others. You give up your freedom. Sure you still maintain the illusion of freedom. You can decide the low level actions you take each day. But you’ve lost the greatest freedom — the ability to choose your own answer to the question, “What is the meaning of my life?” If you let someone else answer this question for you, then you’re owned. And it may not even be a single person giving you that answer. Most likely it’s a collection of many sources: advertisers, employers, coworkers, friends, family, social pressures, etc. Each contributes a small piece to your answer. But because there are so many contributors, the answer that comes out is fuzzy and complicated. So you end up living a fuzzy, complicated life crafted by third-party biographers, many of which you’ve never met.

On the other hand, when you know your purpose and live it consciously each day, you’re free. No one else owns you. Whether you run your own business or work for someone else, you always see yourself as self-employed. You lead your own life, and although others may hold formal authority over you in some situations, you focus on what you can control and don’t whine about what you can’t, and in so doing, your influence expands to the point that you become a leader no matter what your formal position. Your leadership comes from knowing your purpose. While your circumstances will change, your inner compass is constant. You could be caught in a sea of external chaos, yet you’re always steering a clear straight-ahead course, which allows you to feel certain when no one else can. It doesn’t matter what position you hold. When you live your purpose, you become a leader. When you don’t live your purpose, you become property. My wish is that everyone finds their purpose and lives the life they were meant to live. I hope my blog offers hope and possibilities for your future, whatever those goals may be. Please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. I look forward to hearing from you. God Bless.
